The latest thinking about what would work best for "Single Term age 55" is that
A President less subject to outside influences would be one that was serving only four years. This would be his single term.
A Senate member of 6 years (one term) might have enough exposure to the public to make him/her less of a risk to the public. When Senators speak we listen. We cannot elect someone like President Obama again. Way too inexperienced. In 2008, the country elected someone who looked and sounded great to people who were going to vote Democratic anyway. Plus, being the first black to serve was just too much for many independents and undecideds to pass on. Later, it was demonstrated that he was very socialistic in policy and was not experienced enough or just lacked the real leadership qualities the position requires. How would the average voter know that? Let us avoid that again.
Have a Senator run after 6 years of exposure to the media, and therefore to us, would be much better.
In the House we want younger people who want to serve and get even more exposure for the long run. In 2012, candidate Romney chose a house member who had displayed sound fiscal views and lead on the implementation of those for his running mate. I like that. Many know who Paul Ryan is and is not.
So, the persons running for the House of Representatives should be at least 52 years of age. Then, they can run for the Senate, and even the presidency and be at least 64 years old when running for the latter office. Good exposure to the public. We should know better, who we are electing.
Remember, there is no shortage of solid experienced persons to run. Let's cut down on the influence of lobbies and PACs by limiting their role more to trying to help some run for the House of Representatives. That would be a great step forward.
Yes, it is true that one way or another the special interests are going to promote who they want and they should do that. It is their right. But, that infuence would be greatly reduced with Term and Age Limits.
The amendment should read:
The Presidency is limited to a requirement of minimum age 64, and will serve only one term. See exceptions.
The Senate to a requirement of minimum age 56. and will serve one term only. See exceptions.
The House of Representatives to a requirement of minimum age 52, and is eligible to run for 3 terms. See exceptions.
Exceptions:
To allow exceptional persons to stay at one level, and therefore to go beyond the term limits above, a very popular and successful person can run again, but must achieve a 60% of the vote in order to do it. (This may prove to be too high and may need to be adjusted down to 55% or something between 55-60%)
